‘N544m fraud’: EFCC to appeal court ruling dismissing case against Babachir Lawal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it will appeal the court judgment dismissing a case of alleged fraud against Babachir Lawal, former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

The commission had re-arraigned Lawal alongside Hamidu David Lawal, his younger brother; Sulaiman Abubakar, Apeh John Monday, and two companies — Rholavision Engineering Ltd and Josmon Technologies Ltd — on a 10 count-charge bordering on alleged diversion of funds, criminal conspiracy, and official corruption to the tune of N544 million.

On Friday, a high court in the federal capital territory (FCT) discharged and acquitted the former SGF over the allegations.

Charles Agbaza, the presiding judge, said the EFCC failed to prove links between the defendants and the corruption charges.

He added that no ingredient of any offence was made out by the 11 witnesses presented by the prosecution.

Reacting to the judgment in a statement on Friday, the EFCC said it would appeal the ruling of the court.

“Ruling on the no case submission made by the defendants today, Justice Agbaza held that the commission which presented 11 witnesses in the course of the trial, failed to establish the ingredients of the alleged offence,” the statement reads.

“He held that the commission did not establish that Babachir Lawal was either a member of the presidential initiative for north east (PINE) that awarded the contract or a member of the ministerial tenders board that vetted and gave approval to the disputed contract.

“But dissatisfied with the ruling, the EFCC has given indication that it will obtain a copy of the judgment for urgent review and challenge its validity at the appellate court.”

How 18-year-old lady went to her former husband's house, threw his four-year-old son inside well

A case of man's inhumanity to man occurred in a community in Katsina State when a young lady who had separated from her husband went to his house, lured his four-year-old son out and threw him inside a well, causing the death of the boy.

The lady, whose name was given as Maryam Habibu, aged 18 years, of Leko village, Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State, was said to have caused the death of the boy, whose name was given as Jamilu Rabi’u, aged four years, by throwing the boy into a well apparently due to anger.

It was gathered that the lady went to the house of her former husband around 10:00 p.m., succeeded in luring the boy out of the house into a nearby area where she was said to have thrown him inside a well, causing the death of the boy.

According to a statement on the incident by the state police command through its Public Relations Officer, Isah Gambo, and posted on his Twitter handle on Saturday, the case was reported to the police command and the lady was promptly arrested.

She was said to have confessed committing the offence and the statement added that more investigations are ongoing after which she is expected to be charged to court.

EFCC arrests Kwara Yahoo boys, recovers cars, others

The anti-graft agency said the arrests followed a sting operation it carried out.

The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement on Friday, gave the names of those arrested as Adeleye Ayodeji, Muhammed Ayub, Odelade Samuel, Sodiq Olanrewaju, Ola Francis, Adeniyi Damilare, Olalekan Samad, Tunde Ayodele, Zubair Buhari and Oladosu Naheem.

Others were Olowokere Jamiu, Lawal Usman, Jamiu Abdulrasaq, Lawal Ahmed, Opeyemi Samuel, Alarape Ahmed, Kolawole Daniel and Ganiyu Taofeek.

The EFCC spokesman said, “The suspects were smoked out of their hideouts at different locations following credible intelligence on the fraudulent activities of the fraudsters in Ilorin and its environs. Specifically, they were arrested at Sobi, Akerebiata and Las Vegas Estate, Asa Dam Road, Ilorin.

“The suspects, who are mostly in their early 20s, included six students of renowned tertiary institutions in the state, a footballer, fashion designer, bitcoin dealer, laundryman and an online gambler.

The Moment Tinubu Said God Bless PDP In His Campaign Flag-off In Plateau State.

The All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had mistakenly said "God Bless PDP" during his presidential campaign Flag-off in Jos, the capital city of Plateau State.

In a video going viral on Social media, Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his speech at the Campaign Flag-off, said "God bless Nigeria, God bless PD, APC, APC, God bless APC".

In the viral video, Tinubu seems to have mistakenly said God bless PDP, but when he realized his mistake, be immediately changed it to APC, but his opponent supporters had already quickly captioned that flaw.

Tinubu had earlier Flag-off his presidential campaign in Rwang Pam Township Stadium, Jos, Plateau State on the 15th of November 2022. There was tight security in the venue as President Muhammadu Buhari alongside other high APC stakeholders were present in the venue.

At least 10 APC governors were present at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium, and it was packed full with Tinubu and Shettima supporters, who wanted to witness the event.
